Totten, Mr.
Roosevelt
Muskegon, Michigan

Mr. Roosevelt Totten, age 88, passed away April 1, 2021 at approximately 3:00pm. A golden heart stopped beating and hard working hands are now at rest. He was born in Starksville, Mississippi on October 1, 1932 to Curry Totten & Stacey Plair. A hard worker from dawn to dusk, he single-handedly managed a small farm with milk cows, pigs, chickens, and farmed the land to produce various crops.

He married the former Roberta Bell on March 13, 1954 and to their union eight children were born. In 1968, he relocated to Muskegon, to seek a better life and career opportunities for himself and the family. Roosevelt had been employed at Campbell Wyant Cannon for over 20 years until retiring on April 1, 1981. After retirement, he pursued his passion as a handyman installing underground wells and sprinkler systems, vehicle mechanic, plumbing and tree removal. However, he was known throughout the state for selling finger licking barbecue ribs, chickens, hogs, goats and his famous homemade barbecue sauce.

Roosevelt was baptized in Jesus name and received the Holy Ghost at Christ Temple Church in Muskegon Heights, MI under the leadership of the late Bishop Willie Lee Burrel. He was a faithful servant as a trustee, barbecued for Councils, Pastor Anniversary, and volunteered in various auxiliaries until his health declined.

Roosevelt was a faithful husband to his lovely wife Roberta (whom he affectionately called Bert). He loved his family, and was a generous man with a kind heart who enjoyed helping people, especially the elderly. He will be deeply missed by family, friends and all that had the pleasure of meeting him.

SURVIVORS

To cherish his memory, Roosevelt leaves his loving wife of 67 years, Roberta Totten; seven children: Larry (Lisa) Totten of Dallas, TX; Rachel (Jimmie) Clark of Muskegon, MI; Melvin (Karene) Totten of Muskegon, MI; Gloria Totten of Kalamazoo, MI; Kenneth (Tonjua) Totten of Ypsilanti, MI; Calvin (Machelle) Totten of Muskegon, MI; Darlisa Totten of Muskegon, MI; grandchildren: Sha Farrier (David) Roehm, Candis (Kalef) Lewis, Teairra Clark, Antonio Clark, Julieaunna Clark, Julia Pearl, Tamara (William) Dean, Jeremiah Totten, Destiny Totten, NaTasha Christian, NaToya Christian, Joseph Christian, Anthony Christian; one sister, Dorothy Watt; godson, Victor (Carol) Sanders; goddaughter, Fredricka (Arlando) Fox-Boles: and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and Christ Temple Apostolic Church members.

To the Totten family I extend my sincere condolences on the loss of your patriarch. I know that your heart and eyes may be sorrowful, but God has prepared a place for him and his mansion was completed. One day you all will reunite with him and the family will be together again, but until then may God rest his peace upon you and your family as the days continue on.

“When his breath departs, he returns to the earth; on that very day, his plans perish”, Psalm 146:4. Blessed is the man who dies with plans for it indicates that he never ceased to live before his death. It is this man who numbers his days well. He has respect and reverence for the fleeting moments and honors the vapor existence that is his life. When a person has lived well, their departure creates feelings of both joy and pain. Joy flowing from full confidence that as a child of God they have reaped the promise, absent from the body, present with the Lord. Pain when the reality of the void created by their leaving and the realization that all they have been in our lives must be spoken of in the past tense – for they are now no more.

Certainly a noble character wrought with the grace and gift of servant-hood and endowed with the disposition of courage, stamina and endurance, Roosevelt Totten was an influential leader, with the performance and personality to represent well in the capacity to which he was called.

Be it resolved that we commit to pray for his niece First Lady Cassie Landrew and the Totten family whose agenda has forever been altered and whose calendar has forever been changed. May each of you carry forth the benefit of your own unique relationship with this impactful personality and live according to the lessons you have learned.
Humbly Submitted,
Loving Word Fellowship

I am so sorry for the lost of Uncle Bell. I loved his quite and mild nature and he will be sorely missed. May Aunt Bert and family be comforted in knowing that God has something better in store for our future. He will call and those who are asleep in death will answer, for he will yearn for the work of his hands, Job 14:13-15. “He will actually swallow up death forever, and the Sovereign Lord Jehovah will certainly wipe the tears from all faces.” (Isaiah 25:8) “ May you be find comfort in his loving care through his beloved son Jesus Christ. GRATEFUL

Grateful is what comes to my mind when I think of you Dad, and all that you have done to take care of our family. Grateful for memories that I will forever hold near and dear to my heart. Grateful is me knowing you are resting in the arms of our Lord Jesus Christ. You have ran your race with grace and finished your course. You have shown yourself approved to God, and He has said “Well Done”.
Yes, I am sad and will miss you and your earthly presence. However, God has given me peace. I knew this day would eventually come, so this is not goodbye. It's, I’ll see you later because I know I will see you again.
Know that momma will be fine. Yes she will have her good days and bad days, but she has unwavering faith. The Lord our God will give her strength that she requires and a peace that surpasses all understanding. Also, she had her loving supporting children: Larry, Rachel, Melvin, Gloria, Kenneth, Calvin and myself. She will be well taken care of, so no worries.
Rest In Peace Daddy. Know that we love you and that you will be sorely missed by us. However, this is not goodbye. It’s I’ll see you later.

They say you should not have family favorites, well that’s too bad because uncle Bell was, still is and will always be my favorite uncle. Uncle Bell was my last living uncle, God saved the best for last to bring home to glory. The things he taught me and so many others will be carried on, and passed along for many generations to come. Not only will he be missed by his immediate family, he will be missed by a countless number of friends and an entire community, for the knowledge of his mind and labor of his hands has blessed so so many in this area. He has taught invaluable skills to some that they would never have been taught if it were not for him. He was truly an Angel from God sent down to earth to serve, and now God has called him home to Glory. He faithfully served God, his family, his church and this community unconditionally. I thank God for blessing me to be able to have one of his BEST angels as my uncle. JOB WELL DONE UNCLE BELL! Thank you for all the conversations, lessons and teachings, they will stay with me forever.

Dad, was a lot of things to many people. A loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and the ultimate handyman who could fix any and everything. He had an amazing heart who would give you the shirt off of his back to help those in need. He was quite, but when he spoke words of wisdom came out like running water out of a faucet. You just had to be listening to hear what he was telling you! He has left a strong foundation to carry on the LEGACY of this gracious man and he will be truly missed.
