Randall Keith Precious
November 11, 1954 - January 4, 2021
Muskegon, Michigan USA

Whenever Randy saw a turtle in the middle of the road he would stop his car, get out, and carry the turtle to safety.

That's the kind of person Randy was.

Randy could tell a story that would have you on the edge of your seat with excitement or falling out of it with laughter. As a ship's captain he would tell tales of guiding the Port City Princess down the mighty Mississippi and across the Gulf of Mexico. Or of navigating the Great Lakes on dark and stormy nights as a captain for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and Grand Valley University Institutional Research Vessels. His nieces and nephews didn't call him Uncle Randy. To them, he was Captain Randy.
Randy was a graduate Grand Valley State University in Business and Political Science. He was owner of The Boat House along with his parents Ralph and Sylvia Precious. He was a terrific businessman and sold many of the boats still on our lakes today.
Randy loved hunting and fishing. It should be noted, however, that in forty years of hunting he would only shoot a single deer. One season when an eight pointer strolled into view, he raised his gun - and didn't fire. He said the buck was too beautiful to kill.

That's the kind of person Randy was.

Randy and his wife, Kristina, hosted more Sunday and holiday dinners for the family than can be counted. Randy loved to cook and to garden. He raised tomatoes and green beans and squash and canned them all. His blueberry jam could win a prize. When the moon was full and the temperature just right, Randy would hike out in the dark and cold to tap his maple trees. After a lot of effort and expense Randy would usually get, oh, about a pint. He could have bought that same pint at the store for five dollars. But that wasn't the point, was it?

Captain Randy took care of his beloved daughter, Sena Precious, and along with Kristina they raised Sena to be the intelligent, caring, strong woman she is today. Randy was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. He served as Senior Warden and Treasurer, Lay Reader and traveled to anoint and pray over the sick. He was an active member of The Order of Saint Luke. Randy also waged a long and arduous battle with the church's ancient furnace. It took a few years, but Randy finally beat the furnace into submission. When you are now warm at St. Paul's, you can thank Randy.

Randy and Kristina's house on Bear Lake was open all summer, every summer, to his sister's families. Randy would get the kayaks and canoes and boats into the water for everyone even though the task was a gigantic pain in the butt. He lit bonfires and blew up rafts and set up tents in the back yard for his nieces and nephews. Animals adored Randy and he loved them right back. His beloved dogs Tango, Blackie and Lily are surely welcoming Randy at heaven's door. He was an active member of the Muskegon Jaycees. Randy enjoyed hunting, scuba diving, spear fishing- which he enjoyed so much in Mogadishu, Somalia. He loved to ski and learned to do so in Ankara, Turkey.

Randy, more than anything, loved his wife Kristina and his daughter Sena. Kristina Martinez and Randy Precious met when they were young. To woo Kristina, Randy inexplicably told her that he could play the piano. Randy could not play the piano. He practiced for two weeks before he finally had to own up. Kristina just laughed and they have been together ever since. Kristina was his rock and he was hers. Married for 38 years they have been there for each other through everything life threw at them, both good and bad.

It's ok to cry about his death. Randy, with his deadpan humor, would probably say, "Well, it's the least you could do." Then he'd do that grin of his that gave it away. Randy Precious was a gentle, kind and caring soul. He would want you to be happy and rejoice in his life - and also rejoice in your own.

That's the kind of person Randy was.

Randy Precious was born on November 11, 1954 in Lansing, Michigan. He passed away on January 4, 2021 peacefully at home after a brief illness with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Kristina Martinez-Precious, daughter, Sena Precious, mother, Sylvia Precious; sisters: Lisa Precious, Lori Precious, Julie Precious (Dana Heiberg), Dana Precious; nieces and nephews: Morgan Bergman, Sean Mitchell, Miles Erickson, Silanchi Erickson, Tori Heiberg and Gus Gueulette; 2 brothers-in-law: Manuel Martinez, Carlos (Kim) Martinez. Words can not express my sorrow for your loss. Randy was a very special friend who always boosted my spirits. He had a gift of giving laughter. The deep down, doubled over, side splitting, tear streaming laughter. It was so cleansing. So special.

To my cousin, Captain Randy:
Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,

But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.

Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;

For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crost the bar.
