William J. Veurink ,78, died Friday, April 11, 2008 at Mercy Hospital in Muskegon. He was born in Grant, Michigan to Jeanne (Dykhouse) and William Veurink, was appointed to West Point in 1948, and married Maxine Klever in 1951. After graduating from the military academy, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Air Force, where he proudly served his country for thirty years. While in the USAF, he earned a Master's degree in Electronics Engineering, was involved in Research and Development, served three tours of duty at the Pentagon, was a decorated pilot in Viet Nam, and served as Vice Commander of European Communications for three years. He retired as a Colonel in 1981. A member of Second Christian Reformed Church in Grand Haven, he is survived by his wife, Maxine; his four children, Lawrence, Nanette, Sue Veurink-Meyer (Jack Meyer), and Shaun (Kimberly); and six grandchildren, Emily, Amanda, Katie, Lexie, Nathan, and Eric. He is also survived by five of his siblings, Dan, Gary, Paul, Gloria, Beth, and their spouses. The memorial funeral services for Col. Veurink will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 15, at Grant Christian Reformed Church (13120 Poplar Ave., Grant, 49327) with Pastor Michael Koetje officiating. Interment will be in the Lakeshore Cemetery in Grand Haven. Friends may meet the family one hour prior to the services at the church. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Michigan.
