Mr. Robert L. Upson, age 91, passed away Sunday, October 15, 2006. He was born on April 15, 1915 to William and Lottie (Ludwig) Upson in Muskegon where he lived all his life. He met Mildred Clawson when he was a lifeguard at Bronson Farm. She was the most beautiful girl on the beach and she stole his heart. They were married on December 30, 1938, with a marriage lasting 67 years. She preceded him in death on June 1, 2006. Mr. Upson retired from Fedders (Norge) in 1980. He had a love for family, hunting, fishing, playing cards, bowling, and dancing. He was active in The Maycroft Square Tappers, life member of the Muskegon Eagles and the Mona Lake Boating Club. He started the first fish frys at the Mona Lake Boating Club and helped put in the cement slab on the point. He was a member of the Muskegon Big Reds and was called "Iron Man Upson" for breaking two records in one Track Meet. He is survived by his 3 children, Norene (Ray) Griffith of Muskegon, Mildred (Dr. Stephen) Kelly of South Haven, Robert (Linda) Upson, Jr. of Fruitport; 14 grandchildren; several great and great great-grandchildren; 1 sister, Alice Proctor and 1 brother, Charles (Roberta) Upson. He was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Debra Karis; son-in-law, James Botten; his brother, Wilford Upson and twin brother, Raymond Upson. SERVICES will be held 11AM Tuesday at The Sytsema Chapel Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc. 737 Apple Ave. 231-726-5210 with Rev. Greg VanderMeer officiating. VISITATION will be 6-8PM tonight and 1 hour prior to the service (10-11AM) Tuesday. MEMORIALS may be made to Brookhaven Resident Transportation Fund for Outings for Robert's many friends there or the Michigan Parkinson Foundation.
