Thomas Paul

Muskegon, Michigan

Thomas Paul Lindrup, age 77, passed away Friday, July 12, 2024 after a courageous battle with MDS bone marrow cancer. He was born in Muskegon, MI on March 11, 1947 to George & Althea (Emorey) Lindrup and graduated from Montague High School. He graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in Food Marketing Management. At MSU he played the French horn in the marching band and his proudest moment was playing in the Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena CA in 1964! He was an avid sailor. At age 8 he attached a sheet to a surfboard and "sailed" across White Lake. Later in life he enjoyed sailing a 34' Catalina he named "Chog In". Tom was a 37 year veteran of Gordon Food Service, in the U.S. and Canada. He joined the company as a sales rep in Niles, MI and was later promoted to category manager for Table Top. Tom was a true Culture Cup for GFS, a solid Servant Leader and had a positive impact on many individuals. He married the former Jackie Ebey Balcom on Feb. 20, 2014 in Maui officiated by his brother Dick and Cindy Lindrup. He and Jackie enjoyed traveling to beautiful places like Norway, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and the National Parks. When they settled near the beach in Muskegon Tom became involved in the biking community. He attended the initial meeting of the "Friends of the Fred Meijer Berry Junction Trail '' where he not only became president but also spearheaded efforts to promote the completion of the last stretch of the trail, connecting the Musketawa Trail with the Hart-Montague Trail. Tom successfully led this effort and continued as president, overseeing enhancements and maintenance on the trail. In 2020, the Muskegon County Bicycling Coalition (MCBC) was formed, with Tom as a founding board member. Tom tirelessly met with city officials, attended local meetings and organized volunteer efforts. As a result almost all municipalities in Muskegon County have adopted the 5-foot rule with MCBC now assisting local governments in developing more walkable, cycling, and public transportation means for safer mobility. Tom also started free bike rodeos for children, organizing volunteers, bikes, riding courses, police departments, schools, Trinity Health for helmet donations, and even hot dogs and snacks. Under Tom's guidance, nine bike rodeos to teach bike safety to kids were held throughout Muskegon County last year. Tom was a regular participant and volunteer in various local ride groups. He served as a "Ride Ranger" on weekly slow ride of "Roll On Muskegon" he assisted with Ride United, LMB's Shoreline Ride, and spearheaded "Ride to Work" week and the annual "Ride of Silence." He enjoyed hiking, kayaking and biking with WEMOG (West Michigan Outdoor Group). He made a significant impact in creating a healthy and growing bicycling community in Muskegon and West Michigan. We can be forever thankful for what he has accomplished and for showing us what can be achieved with determination and dedication.
