Through the life of Susie Davis, we learn what it means to be the hands and feet of the Lord she loved. Life was not without times of trial for her, but she never backed down from any challenge and continually carried herself with grace and finesse. Second only to her faith was the love that Sue had for her family, and throughout her life she was the matriarch of her family. Compassionate, generous, and hardworking, she created a beautiful legacy that is deeply rooted in faith for the generations who follow her. Susie will never be forgotten. Susie was born on November 26,1918, in Columbus, Mississippi, and was named for her grandmother. She was the third of four children given to her parents, Henry and Annie Lawrence. Sadly, she never knew her mother who died when Sue was three years old, leaving the children to be raised by her father and grandmother. When she was older Sue would often recall how her father would put her and her brother on his knee and cry, which left her to ask, "What's wrong papa?" but she never could recall what his answer was. Bering born and raised in Mississippi was something that Susie was always very proud of. Her father was a hardworking farmer, and Susie, along with her older sisters, Daisy Lane and Nettie Terry, and her younger brother, Henry Jr., were responsible for helping out around the farm. Her father provided 167 acres of land for his family to ensure that they would never have to experience the humiliation of share cropping. Susies father took great pride in working hard and being independent, which made quite the impression on Susie. These were also values that he instilled within his children. With the end of WWI in 1919, we were recognized as a world leader, and the decade that followed was filled with great prosperity. The 1930s were a much different story as the entire decade was cloaked in the hardship of the Great Depression. The American spirit could not be dampened, however, and families did whatever they could to make ends meet - Susies family was no exception. When Sue became of age, she married and started her own family in Columbus. She was blessed with four children altogether with her first husband. After separating, Sue moved to Muskegon in the forties with her children to start a new life. It was in Muskegon that Sue met her second husband, Henry Davis. After dating for a time, Sue and Henry were married, and together they welcomed four additional children into their hearts and home. The children Sue affectionately called a second set of children arrived eight years after her first set of four children. She was a homemaker who also sometimes worked as a cook part-time in various restaurants including the White Sands in Whitehall and Lakey Foundry Cafe, too. This was a great fit as Sue was an amazing cook who was best known for her fried chicken, chicken potato pies, and almost anything with chicken in it. She was deeply saddened with the death of her beloved Henry in 1977. Life was forever changed for Sue when she received the gift of the Holy Spirit at a church revival in 1956. From that point forward she was a bold spokesperson for Jesus Christ. Sue would minister in the grocery store, in the street, at her church, Angel Community Church, and anywhere else the Spirit led her. Her favorite saying was, "I love the Lord with all of my heart, and this was more than just her favorite saying as it was also clear in the way she lived her life. Sue taught her children, in addition to several of her children's peers, of the great wisdom found in the Bible. She studied the Bible diligently throughout her life until her eyesight became dim. However, she did not let that stop her as she started listening to Bible tapes. In this way, Sue's communication with the Lord never wavered, and her faith remained strong. An independent woman filled with timeless wisdom that was Spirit-led, Sue was the one whom her entire family relied on for guidance and direction. It came as no surprise to those who knew Sue that she went back to school to earn her high school degree in her early sixties. She attended Muskegon Community College where she studied Spanish, and Sue excelled in her studies. She worked hard, too, as she practiced her Spanish on a daily basis. Susie continued to pursue the things she loved well into her nineties as her health remained strong throughout most of her life. When her health finally did decline during her sunset years, she never once complained. With a life that spanned nearly a century, Susie Davis was a blessing to all who were within her reach. She never focused her time and attention on the things of this world, rather, she set her sights on spreading the reason for the unending joy that was in her heart, sharing the love of Lord with everyone she could. Susie will be deeply missed while her memory remains forever near and dear to those too numerous to count. Susie Davis died Wednesday, October 23, 2013.
