Steven Douglas Verge

Verge, Steven Douglas Muskegon, Michigan Steven Douglas Verge, age 61, of Muskegon passed away Tuesday, May 31, 2022. He was born in Knoxville, TN on July 30, 1960 to Raymond "Doug" & Rita (Mason) Verge. Steve graduated from Muskegon High School in 1978 then attended the University of Michigan graduating in 1983 with a B.A. in Communication. He was a proud father, who was able to witness both of his children, Alison and Owen, also graduate from U of M. An alma mater was not all he and his children shared. Most of his professional life was spent as a dedicated father sharing his love of baseball, sports, music and comics with his children. Steve worked as a freelance writer publishing short stories with a mixture of horror, fantasy, and humor in magazines and webzines. He often volunteered in the local community and at his children's schools, serving on the Board of Directors for the Muskegon Film Festival and assisting students with Hackley Library's annual Write for Fright contest. Steve was heavily involved in his children's interests, coaching them in little league baseball and attending all of their many sporting events over the years. He continued as a volunteer coach for the Muskegon High School baseball team even after his own children had graduated. Steve himself played baseball his entire life including the city league, the "Over 30" league, and even returning to the city league in recent years as a substitute to play with his son. He has the distinction of being the only individual to have played in baseball leagues at Marsh Field for five consecutive decades. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. SURVIVORS His parents, Doug and Rita Verge; daughter Alison Verge; son, Owen Verge and Owen's girlfriend Natalynne Scott; former spouse Karyn (Kortering) Verge of Muskegon. Celebration of Life A Celebration of Steve's Life will take place on Sunday, August 28, 2022 at Lakeside Veterans Club, 1777 Lakeshore Dr., Muskegon, MI 49441.
