Mr. Spiros A. Bouyoucos, age 85, passed away, Wednesday, May 28 at the Poppen Residence. He was born on January 15, 1923 in Likohia, Greece. He graduated from the University of Athens in Greece with a Bachelors of Science in Chemistry. In 1957, he came to the United States to work as a chemist for The Dow Chemical Co. for 29 years. He was a member of the American Chemical Society and a long time member of the Greek Orthodox churches in both Saginaw and Muskegon. As a student, he had to temporarily suspend his studies to serve in the Greek army. His father's brother, George Bouyoucos, professor at Michigan State University was an inspiration to him throughout his life and helped him meet his academic accomplishments. On September 24, 1963 he married the former Theodora Mazarakis and they both resided in Midland, MI for 45 years. In August, 2004, they moved to Fruitport to be with their children and grandchildren. In addition to his wife Theodora, Spiros is survived by his daughters: Antonia (Gene) Richards of Clarkston, MI, Ismene (Joe) Bouyoucos-Russell of Spring Lake, MI, and Sophia (Chad) Bouyoucos-Sayen of Fruitport, MI. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Alena Jordan, Zoie and Caleb Russell, and Keaten and Kostas Sayen. They were all his pride and joy and will continue his legacy. In addition, he is survived by his sister Dina in Athens, Greece and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded by 3 brothers and 4 sisters. SERVICES will be held 11:00 AM, Saturday May 31, 2008 at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church with Father Catlin Mott officiating. VISITATION with the family will be held 6-8 PM Friday at: The Lee Chapel Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc. 6291 S. Harvey St. 231-798-1100 Burial will take place in Fruitport Township Cemetery. Memorial Contribution may be given to Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church.
