Mrs. Sophia Ouwerkerk Hartman, age 91, died May 2, 2011. She was born in Muskegon on December 1, 1919 to Nicholas and W. Maria (Pfeifer) Ouwerkerk, and married Philip F. Hartman, also a Muskegon native, on April 18, 1943. Mrs. Hartman was a member of the First Congregational Church. She was a lifelong resident of Norton Shores and Muskegon, but also resided in Memphis, TN in 1943-1945 where her husband served as a pilot with the Army Air Corps and where her first child Christine was born. Mrs. Hartman graduated in 1942 from the Cornell University-New York Hospital School of Nursing in New York City. She was an RN and worked at Hackley Hospital for 20 years, and was active in the Muskegon Art Museum and the Questers. SURVIVORS Daughter, Lieschen Hartman of Boulder, CO and son, P. Fred Hartman of Portage, MI; son-in-law, James Allen of Fair Haven, MI; grandchildren, Maria (Kurt) Olson of Rochester Hills, MI, Joseph (Melissa) Allen of Front Royal, VA, John Allen of Detroit, MI, and Lane Hartman of Lawton, MI; great-grandchildren, Fiona and Lily Olson and Sarah Allen; sisters, Joan (John) Nedeau of North Muskegon, Julia Long of Grand Rapids, Corrie Seyferth of Atlanta, GA, and Hannah Hartkopf of Mundelein, IL; sister-in-law, Dot Ouwerkerk of Ohio and brother-in-law, Frank DeRose of Muskegon; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by husband Philip, daughter Christine Allen, and son John Hartman; sisters Ruth Chandler, Mary (May) Klemp, and Lydia DeRose; and brother John Ouwerkerk. SERVICE A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
