Smith, Robert Sidney

Mr. Robert Sidney Smith, age 89, went into the loving arms of Jesus on Monday, November 13, 2006 at the Harbor Hospice Poppen House in Fruitport. He was born on October 23, 1917 in Hesperia, Michigan, to Robert and Lula Smith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois J. Smith, his brother, Ralph Smith and two sisters, Mildred Smith and Ila Smith Chase. He is survived by his five children, Georgia (Beert) Kamphorst of Spring Lake, Marcia (Dan) MacLaren of Twin Lake, Lane (Elaine) Smith of Grand Haven and twins, Craig (Teri Smith) of Ferrysburg and Brenda (Rev. Ken) Dykhoff of Kalamazoo; and 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. In his youth Bob was stationed with the CCC's, (Civil Conservation Corps) on Isle Royale; worked 42 years at Continental Motors both downtown and on the hill and retired in 1982. Since retirement he and Lois spent several years between Muskegon and Florida. He enjoyed many years attending the Spring Lake Wesleyan Church and was a member of the First Wesleyan Church in Muskegon. In the last year of his life he became a chaplain and a member of the Muskegon camp of Gideons. A FUNERAL SERVICE will be held 3:00 PM Friday, November 17, 2006 at Spring Lake Wesleyan Church with his son-in-law, Rev. Ken Dykhoff of Spring Valley Wesleyan Church of Kalamazoo officiating and Rev. Dennis Jackson of the Spring Lake Wesleyan Church co-officiating. INTERMENT will take place at Mona View Cemetery. VISITATION with Mr. Smith's family will be 6-9 PM Thursday at The Sytsema Chapel Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc. 737 Apple Avenue (231) 726-5210 Visitation will also be held 1 hour prior to the service, 2-3 PM Friday at church.
