Shirley Rae McCartney, age 83, passed away Saturday, February 17, 2024. She was born in Muskegon, MI on August 5, 1940 to John & Esther (Kammeraad) Rooks and Graduated from Muskegon High School in 1958. She went on to Western Michigan University where she earned a Bachelors of Arts degree and eventually her Masters Degree in Library Science. Shirley was a teacher at Bunker School for a few years before serving as the Librarian at the Public Library in Goshen, IN and then New Madison, OH. She finally returned to Muskegon and worked as the Librarian at Brooks Correctional Facility until retiring in 2001. Shirley enjoyed reading and singing and was a very accomplished pianist and guitar player. She sang with the Sweet Adelines for a number of years and also in her own quartet. Shirley was an active member at McGraft Congregational Church for many years and presently was a member at First Presbyterian Church. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
SURVIVORS
Children, Donna (Don) Buko, David McCartney, Daniel McCartney, Diane Rhyee; grandchildren, Sylvia Rhyee, Iris Rhyee, Adam Ryhee. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Stephanie Buko and her sisters Phyllis Forseyth and Elinor Thorsen. The family would like to thank the staff at Harbor Hospice Poppen House for their wonderful care, especially Ashley, Brittany & Lori.
