Shannon Lynn Zerlaut, age 58, of Holton, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, surrounded by love, following a courageous two-year battle with pancreatic cancer.

She was born on May 14, 1968, in Muskegon, Michigan, to Vicki Jane (McGruder) and the late Curtis Assink. A graduate of Gaylord High School, Shannon made her home in the Holton area for over 25 years, where she became a beloved and familiar face in the community. She worked as a self-employed cosmetologist and beautician and also served local patrons at the pizza shop and ice cream parlor - always with warmth and a genuine interest in those around her.

Shannon was a singular soul. She was a skilled and avid bow hunter, a passion that set her apart and that she wore with quiet pride. Her love for animals ran deep; she devoted herself to rescuing and hand-rehabilitating injured wildlife - squirrels, raccoons, and any creature in need - nurturing them back to health with patience and tenderness. Shannon was a woman of faith and found community and purpose through the DeColores movement. She attended Holton and Sitka United Methodist Church, where her faith was both a personal anchor and a means of serving others.

Above all, Shannon was a natural caretaker. She gave herself wholeheartedly to those she loved, most especially her cherished Grandma Barber, for whom she provided devoted care. She found meaning in small, significant things - including stones, which she and her family exchanged as tokens of connection and love.

Shannon will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her siblings, Tony Rich and Melissa Rich; her stepchildren, Eric Zerlaut and Amy Zerlaut; her aunt and cherished second mother, Etta Prell; her former husband Mac Zerlaut and a wide circle of cousins, friends, and her beloved DeColores community. Shannon was preceded in death by her father, Curtis Assink, Mother Vicki Stansberry and her half-brother, Matthew Kelly.

In accordance with her family's wishes, Shannon has been cremated. ACelebration Of Shannon's Life will take place on Saturday, October 17, 2026 from 2:00 - 5:00 PM at Fruitport Community Church. In the spirit of who Shannon was, her family will scatter a portion of her remains at Lake Michigan, where she will rest alongside her parents.
