There are times when life is so hard and seems so very unfair at the same time. Why some people are given many decades to build their legacy and some are given so few is one of the many questions that continues to go unanswered. With what would seem to be a lifetime full of promise ahead of him, the voice of Ryon Hernandez was silenced, but the impact he made on the hearts and lives of those around him was no less significant. His legacy is one of discipline, hard work, and great love for those around him. Ryon treasured his family above all else and was the sort of young man who would give the shirt off his back to someone in need. The lives of those who loved Ryon will never be the same now that he is gone, but they will be forever grateful for having been touched by such an extraordinary young man even if for only a moment in time. Much can be said about the decade of the 1980s as it was full of noteworthy events that forever changed the cultural fabric of our nation. As part of this vibrant decade, 1987 was one for the record books since it was the year that a new drug was being used for the treatment of AIDS, The Simpsons made their way into living rooms across the country, and Michael Jackson topped the charts with Bad. This was a year to remember for the family of Reny and Edie (Moreno) Hernandez for a much different reason since it was on September 18th that they welcomed the birth of their son, Ryon. Born in Muskegon, Michigan, Ryon was the oldest of three children in his family including his younger sisters, Sofiya and Yazmen. His father worked as a machinist while his mother was a homemaker. Ryon experienced a childhood that was rather typical for the youth of his generation in many ways. His family moved around a bit within the Muskegon area and as a result, Ryon attended a few different schools including Phillips, Roosevelt, Glenside, and Bunker. He went on to graduate high school from Waypoint Academy where he was popular among his peers and was even crowned homecoming king. It was during his formative years that Ryon established cornerstones in his life that would remain as such throughout the rest of his journey. His family was of great importance to him for as long as he could remember and with a large extended family, there was always a gathering for one reason or another. Ryons cousins were among some of his best friends, especially his cousins Miguel and Macario. His younger cousins all loved him dearly and especially treasured the times they spent rough housing together. Ryons artistic talent was something that he discovered when he was young as he could draw amazing pictures right from the start. Life-like art was his specialty including pencil sketches of people and an amazing drawing of a cobra for the cover of his high school yearbook. Ryon also worked with watercolors and oils. As Ryon grew into a teenager, he developed different interests that he loved pursuing when he had the time. He was a very handsome young man who took great pride in his body and began working out. Ryon took karate classes, lifted weights, and ate a healthy diet all changes that became evident as he grew into a man. More recently, he had been getting involved in mixed martial arts, training and working out with his uncles. Ryon liked to go hunting, usually for deer, and he also developed a love for guns and knives. He liked to go for target practice at a local firing range, and he built up quite a collection of both guns and knives that he took meticulous care of. Like so many teenagers, Ryon felt the need to get a bit of breathing room from his parents and as a result, he moved in with his Grandmother Moreno in Muskegon Heights. This worked out well since she needed some company and Ryon had the ability to spread his wings a little. He also regularly hung out with his friends, yet still spent a lot of time with his family at various gatherings and for holidays. In order to support himself, Ryon worked at a few different jobs. After high school he found work in Grand Haven at a company that manufactures vitamins where a couple of his uncles also worked. Ryon was laid off after a time and about one year later, he began working as a production worker at Magma Decoma International, an automotive supplier in Holland. He moved in with his aunt in Holland for awhile in order to be closer to work. Although Ryon Hernandez could look a bit intimidating upon first glance, it didnt take long to discover his soft side. He was kind and fun-loving with a special place in his heart for his family. Ryon was a gifted artist with so much potential in so many different areas. A loyal friend, he was well-liked by many and someone who could always be counted on. Ryon will be deeply missed by all those whose lives he touched, his bright light extinguished much too soon. Ryon M. Hernandez died Wednesday, December 29, 2010.
