Robert Ruff was a hard-working man whose life was a reflection of his strong work ethic and dedication to the beliefs he held dear. The 1910s were a decade which was filled with much unrest and conflict between workers and employees with the continued growth of labor unions and the plethora of unsafe work environments that littered numerous cities. American children were more common in the workplace than they were in schools as only one-third enrolled in elementary school and less than ten percent went on to graduate. Joseph and Jessie Ruff, of Boston, Massachusetts were focusing on their own bright future, however, as they were reveling in the joy of the birth of their son, Robert. Born on January 30, 1913, Robert was also joined in the Ruff family by his brother, Louis. As a student, Robert attended local schools and in high school he was a talented member of the debate team. Like so many young men of his generation, Robert answered the call to defend our nations freedom. He valiantly served in the United States Army Air Corps, preserving the way of life that we still enjoy today. Robert worked hard throughout his lifetime and pursued things that he enjoyed as well. He worked as an inspector for many years at Teledyne Continental Motors, a manufacturer of engines for various independent manufacturers of automobiles, tractors, and stationary equipment from the 1920s through the 1960s. Robert was also co-owner and operator of Vanity Beauty School. Robert was a longtime Mason as a member of the Freemasonry organization in which members share moral and metaphysical ideals, which include, in most cases, a constitutional declaration of belief in a Supreme Being. He was also a member of the Temple Bnai Israel. Robert was also blessed to become a father with the birth of his daughter, Sandra. After a long life that spanned wars, the Great Depression, the explosion of technology, and the introduction of rock n roll, Robert sadly died and will be deeply missed. Robert Ruff died on Thursday, May 14, 2009 in Muskegon, MI. Roberts family includes his daughter, Sandy Lund; his granddaughter, Deanna; great grandchildren, Samuel and Alex; and brother, Dr. Louis Ruff. A graveside service will be held on Friday, May 15, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Mona View Cemetery with Rabbi Alan Alpert officiating.
