Mr. Raymond R. "Ray" Bauer, Sr., age 87, passed away Tuesday, July 24, 2007, at his home. He was born June 7, 1920 in New Ulm, Minnesota, to Albert and Frances (Altman) Bauer and lived most of his life in the Muskegon area. He received his high school diploma from Cathedral High School in New Ulm, MN, and his bachelor's degree from St. Johns University in Collegeville, MN. He served as a 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Army during WWII from 1942-1945 and was stationed from North Africa to Italy. After his service in the Army, he received his master's degree from Notre Dame in South Bend, IN. He married the former Dorothy E. Werner on December 27, 1949 at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church in Newaygo, MI. Ray worked over 33 years as a chemistry teacher at Muskegon High School and retired from teaching in 1982. He was an active member of the Muskegon County Retired Teachers Association. Ray was a long-time member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church. Ray enjoyed reading, gardening and bird watching, but his greatest hobby was investing time with his grandchildren. Ray was an avid sports fan of Notre Dame, Muskegon High School and the Chicago Cubs. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Dorothy; children and grandchildren, Raymond (Holly) Bauer, Jr. of Newaygo and their 3 children, Bethanie (Dean) duChemin, Jeff and Nathan Bauer; Donald Bauer of Laurel, MD; Barbara (Robert) Stefaniak of Renton, WA; Richard (Heidi) Bauer of Grand Rapids and their 3 children, Adam, Noah, and Lydia Bauer; Thomas (Carol) Bauer of Grand Haven and their 3 children, Lisa, Matthew, and Lauren Bauer; Mary (Edward) Hart of Arlington, TX and their 2 children, Max and Ryan Hart; James (Teresa) Bauer of Norton Shores and their 2 children Derek and Sydney Bauer; John (Tammy) Bauer of LaGrange Park, IL and their 2 children, Eric and Ian Bauer; Elizabeth Bauer of Jenison; and 2 great grandchildren, Dana and Jaxon duChemin. He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 brother, Don Bauer and 1 sister, Delores Arnsdorf. THE MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL will be celebrated 11:00 AM Tuesday, July 31, 2007 at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church with the Rev. Fr. Michael P. Olson as celebrant. INTERMENT will take place at St. Bartholomew Catholic Cemetery in Newaygo. VISITATION with Ray's family will be 2-4 and 6-8 PM Monday at The Sytsema Chapel Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc. 737 Apple Avenue (231) 726-5210 A Scripture Service will be held at 6 PM Monday evening.
