Phyllis F. Thomas of Grand Haven, Michigan passed away peacefully on June 17, 2014 . She was born in Muskegon, MI on May 1, 1928 to the late Albert and Julia Bigsby. Phyllis graduated from Muskegon Heights High School, and married Richard Thomas in 1947. In the course of their marriage of 54 years, they raised five children, built a successful pharmacy business, and deeply enjoyed their friendships, travel adventures, and the lives of their children. In addition to being a caring mother and housewife, Phyllis worked in later years as a real estate agent and respiratory therapist. She earned a pilots license and loved to fly, and once participated in a trans-continental air race. Physical fitness was one of Phyllis passions. She practiced yoga and enjoyed running, competing in many races and winning a number of trophies. In their later years, Phyllis and Richard enjoyed living in Florida. Phyllis volunteered in a soup kitchen in Cape Canaveral, earning the friendship and respect of many. Weekly jazz performances in Cocoa Beach were a favorite activity and led to a variety of friendships. After Richard passed away, Phyllis continued to enjoy the Friday jazz events, and the companionship of her friend David Saunders. Phyllis is survived by her sister Flora; five children: David (Kay), Daniel (Wendy), Douglas (Denise), Laura (Kevin), and Sue (Tom); 13 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of North Ottawa. The family is planning a memorial service at a later date.
