He graduated from Muskegon High School in 1946 and enlisted in the US Navy in 1950. During his flying career, he flew 14 different aircraft and logged in over 23,000 hours of flight time and was chosen to be a flight instructor for the crew of Air Force One for three years. He also became an instructor of TWA pilots for 15 years. Norm loved hunting and fishing and after his retirement from TWA in 1985 he earned his Charter Captains license.
