Melissa Ellen Carden
Melissa Ellen Carden, 70, of Muskegon, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 3, 2026, after a courageous and long-fought battle with cancer.
Born on July 1, 1956, in Muskegon, MI, to Frederick and Margaret (Westover) Alger, Melissa was a proud graduate of Fruitport High School and later earned an associate's degree from Muskegon Community College. She was known for her incredible work ethic at places like Micrographics and Trophy House, and last worked at Senior Resources.
Melissa was a true fighter in every sense of the word. She faced her 31-year battle with cancer with a tenacity and spirit that inspired all who knew her. Her strong will and sharp wit remained with her to her final moments. She met the love of her life, James "Jim" Carden, at an outdoor party where she caught his eye on a motorcycle, beginning a 50-year journey together. Melissa was a loving wife, devoted mother, and doting grandmother. Her foresight and dedication were evident in the way she cared for her family, ensuring they were supported during this difficult time.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Jim; her children, Elizabeth (Jeff) Foster and Sarah Carden; her grandchildren, Aurora (Tyler) McIntyre, Alivia Foster (Garrett Bloom), and Amelia Foster (Andrew Stager); her great-grandson, Easton McIntyre, with another on the way; and her brother, David Alger; Mother-in-law, Marion Poole; in-laws, Susan Cardenm Emily (Greg) Roberts, Tim Carden; many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Frederick and Margaret Alger; her brother, Hugh Alger; and her sister, Sue Alrich.
A celebration of Melissa's life will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the Park Meadows Community Center in Muskegon. The family encourages a casual atmosphere for sharing memories.
