Mayrene (Maurene) Phillips was born on September 7, 1946 in Wheatley, Arkansas to William and Florence (Henderson) Phillips. In 1953, the family relocated to Muskegon Heights, Michigan where Mayrene attended Muskegon Heights Public Schools and was active in the Glee Club. She was a member of the graduating class of 1965. She also attended Muskegon Community College where she studied Psychology.
As a youth Mayrene came to know and love the Lord. She attended Friendship Baptist Church with her family under the leadership of Reverend Smith. While attending, she served on the Usher Board and sang in the choir. In her latter years she maintained a close relationship with the Lord. She enjoyed reading the bible. As a writer, over the last 20 years she wrote scriptures on anything that came into her hands, which included a massive amount of bible verses which were engrained in her heart.
Her former employers include Sealed Power and GTE (currently Verizon), where she worked as a Telephone Operator. She retired following many years of dedicated service.
Mayrene was a strong woman and a loving mother to her three children, Chase, Chauncey and Chadd. She was a hard worker and consistently provided for her family. As a woman of faith she enjoyed watching numerous Pastors preaching on television. She also shared her belief with her family and encouraged them to know the Lord, to serve Him and live a life committed to prayer. She was very generous, and if able to help someone in need, she would. She loved her parents and was the primary caregiver to her mother until her passing in 2004. She was quiet and kept to herself, yet she had a sense of humor and could be quite funny. She was simple and down to earth, never flashy or loud and always soft spoken. In her leisure she enjoyed watching basketball and tennis and enjoyed a phone conversation with her granddaughter, Ebony, to discuss match highlights. Saturday, October 12th, 2024 Mayrene transitioned into the presence of her Lord and Savior. She will be greatly missed.
Mayrene is survived by her children: Chase Phillips of Muskegon, MI, Chauncey and Chadd Phillips, both of Grand Rapids, MI; siblings, Louis (Gertie) Phillips of Albany, Georgia and Glenda Neal of Muskegon Heights, MI; one granddaughter, Ebone' Cotton of Muskegon, MI; Sister-in-laws, Saundra Phillips and Tanya Phillips, numerous nephews, nieces, additional family members and friends, including special friends, Lawanda Furlough, Peggy and Carol Lewis, Ronnie Fay Huey and last, but not least, Pat.
