Matthias "Matt" Young

Matthias "Matt" Young, age 71, died suddenly on Saturday April 19, 2008 at Spectrum Hospital in Grand Rapids. He was born on September 4, 1936 to Charles and Margaret Young in Muskegon. He was a member of Muskegon Catholic Central High School's first graduating class in 1954. Matt was co-captain of the MCC football team and attended Western Michigan University on a football scholarship. Later, he served in the Air National Guard. Matt had a successful career in the industrial fastener business. As an avid sailor, he was a member of the Western Michigan Yachting Association and Spring Lake Yacht Club where he served as Commodore in 1987-88. Matt loved sailing on the Great Lakes, and logged over 30 Mackinac races on the Ranger and Sleeping Bear. He enjoyed skeet shooting as a member of the North Ottawa Rod and Gun Club. Over the years, Matt developed his skills as a nature and landscape photographer; his memory will live on through his many fine works. Matt was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Spring Lake. Survivors include four children: Stephen (Kim) and Jeffrey (Sara) of Grand Haven, Michael (Melissa) of Rockford, Amy (Ethan) Cronkite of Oak Park, MI; 7 grandchildren, Michaela, Mackenzie, Jacob, Morgan, Alexander, Ramona and Isaac; stepson Bradford Bush (Laura) and their children Jane, Jack and Grace of Chelsea, MI; 5 brothers and 4 sisters: Sr. Charlotte Young, RSM, John (Geraldine) Young of Muskegon, Charles (Mary) Young of Tampa, FL, Kathleen (Roger) Johnson of Muskegon, Patricia (John) Schudel of Arcadia, FL, David (Karen) Young of Spring Lake, Jacquelyn Young of Muskegon, Robert (Susan) Young of Muskegon, Christopher (Becky) Young of Santee, CA; 26 nieces and nephews; 31 great nieces and nephews; and many cousins and friends. He is also survived by friend and former wife, Annette Young of Grand Haven, sister-in-law, Penni (Frederick) Young of Vista, CA, and special friend, Lynn Goede of Grand Rapids. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Margaret Young; brother, Frederick Young, sister, Eleanor Young, and wife, Patricia Young. Friends may meet the family from 2-4 and 6-8 PM Wednesday, April 23, at VanZantwick Bartels & Kammeraad Funeral Home in Spring Lake with a Scripture Service at 7:45 PM. A funeral service will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Spring Lake Thursday, April 24, at 11:00 AM with Rev. Leonard Sudlik officiating. Interment will be in Spring Lake Cemetery.
