Charles "Chuck" L. Matkovich, age 52, died Saturday, October 21, 2006, in Grand Haven. He was born May 10, 1954, in Grand Haven to C. Alvin and Margaret (Schultz) Matkovich. He graduated from Grand Haven Senior High in 1972 and married Candace E. Harrington on March 31, 1986. Chuck worked for the Michigan Department of Corrections from 1978-2005. He retired on June 1, 2005, after 27 years of loyal service. Chuck was a licensed tax assessor for the state of Michigan. He had planned a career in Real Estate sales and had just recently passed the state of Michigan Real Estate sales exam. Chuck was a member, volunteer, and firearms supplier for many sporting organizations in the area since 1990, including Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, North Ottawa Rod and Gun Club, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Safari Club International, and Whitetails Unlimited. Chuck was a life member and former president for three terms of the North Ottawa Rod and Gun Club. He enjoyed walking, hunting, fishing, clay target shooting, and being outdoors. He also enjoyed riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle and spending time around campfires with family and friends at their cabin in Hesperia. Chuck was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Grand Haven. Chuck is survived by his wife, Candace, and daughter, Caitlyn, both of Grand Haven; a brother, Bruce (Virginia) Matkovich; 2 brothers-in-law, Tom (Lori) Harrington and Kevin (Sue) Harrington; 3 nieces, Melissa Matkovich, Kendal (Brent) Holtrop, and Hannah Harrington; 4 nephews, Paul Matkovich, Jesse Harrington, Tory Harrington, and Kevin Harrington II. Chuck was preceded in death by his father on August 20, 2003, and his mother on September 21, 2003. The service for Chuck will be held 4:00 p.m. Thursday, October 26, 2006, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Grand Haven. Friends may meet the family one hour prior to the service at the church.
