Mrs. Martha Mittleider, 93, passed on to heaven on Tuesday evening, December 28, 2021, days after celebrating one last Christmas with her family around her. Martha was born January 23, 1928 to Justus Loyal Hissong and Ara Belle (Wilcoxen) Hissong in Muskegon, Michigan. At 11 years old, Martha suffered the tragic loss of her mother in a car accident. With the support of foster families and the Salvation Army, Martha overcame her challenging childhood. She completed her GED at Orchard View High School in 1980. On November 2, 1946, she married Edwin Mittleider and they celebrated 58 years of marriage. She became an active member at Trinity Baptist Church where she sang in the choir. Later she taught Sunday School at Olivet Evangelical Free Church and served on the board of Women's Ministries. Martha retired as an admissions clerk from Hackley Hospital in 1983. She worked at Get Planted for 5 years. She continued on with her passions and hobbies for decades longer: she gardened; she sewed; she perfected the art of frying chicken. She loved movies, bowling, long evenings of 5 Straight, and spending time with her family and friends. Martha's faith in Christ and sense of fun made her a blessing to everyone fortunate enough to call her "Pootz" or "Mom" or "Grandma" or, later, "Grandma Great." Martha was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Edwin Mittleider, her brother Justus Hissong, her son-in-law Timothy McFarland, and her grandson Joel Shriver. Martha is survived by four daughters, Darlene (William) Hines, Ruth Shriver, Carolyn (Patrick O'Bryan) Hoel, and Janice (Timothy) McFarland; 9 grandchildren, Heidi Shattuck, Amy (Brent) Dickman, Andrew (Sandra) Hines, Chad Hoel, Kimberly (C.J. Johnson) Hoel, Jeff (Stacy) Shriver, Angie (Tracy) Breen, Jason (Cassie) McFarland, and Justin (Stephanie) McFarland; 28 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mary Lappo and Caroline Tindall. The family would like to thank Christian Care Assisted Living for their excellent care of Martha in her final years. A memorial celebration will be scheduled in May of 2022.
