Graves, Jr., Marshall W. "Hoss", Navy Commander 11/20/1946 - 3/2/2020 Marshall W. Graves, Jr. (Hoss) Passed away at the age of 73, on March 2, 2020 at the VA Medical Center I Martinez, CA after a long illness. He was born on November 20, 1946 in Muskegon to Marshall W. Graves, Sr. and Veronica Graves (Carskadon). He was a graduate of Muskegon Catholic Central HS in 1964 and attended Muskegon Community College after graduation. Hoss then transferred to the University of Michigan, obtaining his master's degree in mechanical engineering. Hoss joined the U.S. Navy and received his wings as a helicopter pilot. After participating in numerous deployments, he became an instructor at the Naval Academy in Annapolis for three years. He also served as Aviation Manager and Liaison at Sikorsky Aircraft, assuring that all new rotary airships met strict Naval standards. He was the senior officer at Alameda Naval Air Facility and was assigned with phasing out military operations and returning the facility to civilian control. After retirement from the Navy, he became Chief of Aviation at the California Department of Forestry in Sacramento. Upon completion of his service there, Hoss further established an internal airline for Intel Corp. He continued to provide various services as an aviation consultant. He was very talented and helped in developing the recipe and delivery system for fire-fighting gel used by many agencies. Hoss devoted much time to the Sacramento Food Bank and was always enthusiastic and helpful. SURVIVORS He is survived by his wife, Marie-Louise (Nelson) Graves; step-mother, Annella Graves; children, Karen (Richard) Miller, Simon (Wendy Bailey) Graves; stepson, Jackson Masters; grandchildren, Isaac Miller, Sophie Miller, Heron Graves; sister, Marsha (John Sheperd) Van Lente; brothers, Henry (Jean) Graves, Roger (Gayle) Graves; many nieces, nephews & special friends, The Nelson and Sylla families; ex-spouse, Suzanne Deck (Cuti). He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Roy F. Graves. SERVICES Cremation has taken place in California and there will be a Graveside Services on Thursday, November 12, 2020 at 2:00 PM at St. Mary's Cemetery Chapel in Muskegon, MI.
