Grider, Mark Renard

Muskegon, MI

Mark Grider, age 52, of Muskegon, Michigan, passed away peacefully on January 6, 2025, at St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Rapids. Born on November 14, 1972, in Muskegon, Mark was the beloved son of Calvin Bankhead and Vonnie Bee (Gary) Grider. He lived a life marked by resilience, love, and a deep passion for family and community.

A 1990 graduate of Muskegon High School, Mark began his career as a foundry laborer at Seal Power. In 1999, a life-changing car accident altered his path, but his strength and determination allowed him to persevere through adversity.

Mark married Shantwanet Grider on December 20, 2012. Though their marriage later ended, their union of love, respect and friendship cause them to remain together until death parted them. Mark faced the heartbreak of losing his son, Marquise Grider Sims, at the age of 22, a loss he carried with deep sorrow. Despite this, he knew he yet had a daughter Marquisa Grider-Sims, and he found immense joy in his grandchildren, Car'dai Harris and Tru Sims.

A true car enthusiast, Mark was a proud member of a Buick club, spending countless hours immersed in his love for classic automobiles. His passion for cars was matched only by his faith, which he nurtured alongside his father as a member of the Church of God Holy Faith in Muskegon under the leadership of Bishop Manasseh L. Bankhead Sr.

Mark is survived by his daughter, Marquisa Grider-Sims; his cherished grandchildren, Car'dai Harris and Tru Sims; his devoted mother, Vonnie Bee Sanders; and his siblings, Brenda Frierson, Jimmy (Vickie) Grider Jr., Alfred Grider, Glenda Grider, Calvin Bankhead Jr., Gloria Vance, William Bankhead, Tesa Bankhead, and Charles Dale Johnson. He also leaves behind many uncles, aunts nieces, nephews, and his loyal dog Diggy. Mark also leaves his special cousin, and good friend, Leslie Walker; and special friends to cherish his memories D. Spann, T. Winters, A. Jackson, C. Chapman, Todd Brewer, and G. Gamble.

He was preceded in death by his Fathers, Calvin Bankhead and Jimmie Grider Sr., his son, Marquise; his brothers, Frankie Grider and James Grider; and his sister, Vanessa Vance.

Mark's journey was one of courage, perseverance, and a deep appreciation for the connections he shared with his family and friends. His memory will live on as a source of inspiration and comfort to all who knew him.
