M. Marian Martin

M. Marian Martin died November 9, 2007. She was born August 18, 1910 in Northport, Michigan to Charles A. John and Minnie Brown John. She graduated from Manton High School in 1927. She attended Wexford County Normal and Central Michigan University, coming to teach in Muskegon Heights in 1932. She also taught for many years in Fruitport and Mona Shores. In addition to a love of teaching, Marian had a passion for bridge and for meeting and talking with friends. Marian married Harvey C. Martin on June 28, 1936. He died in 1991. A Muskegon businessman for over 50 years, he owned Martin Coal Co., Martin Building Supply, and Martin-Monroe Co. Marian enjoyed living on Spring Lake for 43 years and traveling with her husband in retirement. She was predeceased by her husband and a son, James B. Martin who died in 2004. She is survived by her son, John H. (Jessie) Martin of Spring Lake; by her daughter, Susan M. (Kenneth) Blakey of Muskegon; and by her daughter-in-law, Ingrid K. Martin of Ann Arbor. She also is survived by grandchildren, Elizabeth Z. (Edward Chan) Martin-Chan, Deborah G. (Dan Shertzer) Martin, Katherine I. Martin, Michael F. Blakey, Maleah A. (Kenneth) Blakey-Shell, Martin Zane Blakey, Kristina K. Martin, and Calvin J. Martin. A memorial service and committal will be held at First Congregational Church, Muskegon, at 2 p.m. on Sunday, November 18. A memorial service also will be held at Freedom Village, Holland, Michigan on Friday, November 23 at 10:30. Memorials: First Congregational Church, Muskegon.
