Luther E. Spalding

Luther E. Spalding, age 98, of Muskegon since January 1998, formerly of Howell, passed away Friday, January 25, 2008. He was born September 9, 1909 in Livingston County, the son of Clarence L. and Phleta V. (Austin) Spalding. Widower of the late Mary Ernestine (Musson) Spalding (2/27/1992) whom he married June 2, 1934 at the Presbyterian Manse in Howell. Dear father of Richard (Stonna) Spalding of Thompsonville, James (Barbara) Spalding of Fowlerville and Sylvia (Alfred) Paquette of Muskegon; dear grandfather of Brett, Kurt and David Spalding, Terri Lynn Mathis, Jennifer Byfield and Lisa Paquette; also survived by 12 great-grandchildren, sisters-in-law, Louise Spalding and Leabelle Spalding, several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Stuart Albright and siblings, Florence (Robert) Miller, Jesse (Luberta) Spalding, Ada (Russell) Miller, Rose (Henry) Cornell, Ruby (Kimberly) Boyden, Claude Spalding and Burton Spalding. Luther was a 1928 Howell High School graduate, he worked for Howell Electric Motors for over 30 years and retired from G.M. Proving Grounds. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Howell, an elder, deacon and Sunday school teacher; he also attended First Presbyterian Church in Muskegon. He was a member of Howell Lodge #38, F. & A.M., Howell Chapter No. 372, O. E. S., volunteer councilman for Boy Scouts of America, winning the Silver Beaver Award. Former member of Howell Square Dance Club; loved hunting and fishing. Visitation Tuesday 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. with funeral services Wednesday, January 30 at 11:00 A.M. from MacDonald's Funeral Home, Howell (517- 546-2800); Pastor Brett Spalding and Pastor Howard Soehl officiating. Burial in Lakeview Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to Harbor Hospice Residence Endowment Fund or Hume Home Captial Improvement Fund. Envelopes available at the funeral home.
