On Monday, July 16, 2007, Lovell Dale Whitman went home to be with his Savior. He was born on June 26, 1925, in Ypsilanti, Michigan. His father was Bert Whitman and his mother was Bertha (Guilick) Whitman. He grew up in Detroit and joined the Navy during World War II. He was a member of the Navy Underwater Demolition Team (UDT) and was a deep sea diver. He was also a journeyman carpenter and licensed builder. He was married to Virginia (DeBruin) Whitman. He worked as a builder in both commercial and residential projects. He was building inspector for Egleston Township, Coopersville, Nunica, and Roosevelt Park. Family members that have gone on before him are his mother and father; a sister and brother; a son; and his wife. He is survived by his two daughters, Rebecca (Greg) Dillahunty and Ruth (Tom) Shillair; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by extended family, Don and Sandy Austin and Dr. Rod and Jeanie Mirich, and many other dear friends. The service for Mr. Whitman will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 20, 2007, at VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home in Grand Haven with Rev. David Horne officiating. Friends may meet the family 4-8 p.m. Thursday, July 19, at the funeral home in Grand Haven. Interment will be in Lake Forest Cemetery. Memorials to Spring Lake Wesleyan Church or to Harbor Hospice are appreciated. "Be watchful, stand firm in your faith, be courageous, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love."
