MURPHY, MRS. LORRAINE Norton Shores Mrs. Lorraine Murphy, age 94, of Norton Shores Muskegon, Michigan, passed away quietly on Wednesday, December 1, 2004 after a short illness. Born in Traverse City, Michigan, on June 20, 1910, she moved with her parents, Chauncey and Mabel Sessions Miller to Fremont, Michigan, where she was raised. She graduated from Fremont High School in 1927 and then attended and graduated from Davenport College in Grand Rapids in 1929. She married Joseph L. Murphy, also of Fremont, on June 20, 1930. After living in Benton Harbor for a short time, they moved to and became lifelong residents of the Muskegon area. Joe Murphy was the General Manager of Hardy's Herpolsheimer's Department Store in Muskegon for many years and then, along with several others, invested in Neway Equipment Company in Muskegon, developer of the original "Air-Ride" suspension system for the truck and trailer industry. Joe Murphy passed away in November, 1967 at age 58. Lorraine worked for many years as an accountant at the B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge in Muskegon and was a long-time member of Central United Methodist Church in Muskegon. SURVIVORS Lorraine was always a most devoted mother to her four children, J. Lee Sue Murphy of Grand Rapids. Paul A. Lexie O'Brien Murphy of Spring Lake, Jean M. Wesley Anderson of Norton Shores, and Mary M. Thomas Lewis of Arlington, Texas. She was particularly proud that they all graduated from the University of Michigan where, for a few years, they were all in attendance at the same time. Lorraine is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, as well as by her sisters, Maurine Norman Graves of Muskegon, and Phyllis Ernest Vegter of Bay City. SERVICE There will be a private family service with Rev. Randall Hansen officiating. Interment at Restlawn Cemetery. VISITATION Friday, 4-7 PM at Clock Funeral Home.
