Mr. Leigh Christian Smith, age 78, passed away Friday, February 2, 2024 after battling several months of complications from a recent surgery. He was born in Muskegon, Michigan on December 20, 1945 to Francis & Clara (Jansen) Smith and graduated from Muskegon High School in 1964. Mr. Smith worked in the family business, Francis F. Smith and Associates Land Surveyors, until it closed in 1982. He then joined the Engineering Department of the City of Muskegon where he worked for over 20 years. He also served as an Environmental Inspector and Water Plant Operator for the city, and retired in 2006. Leigh was a lifelong member of the Muskegon Elks Lodge and the Muskegon Pistol Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and was an avid collector of Civil War and World War II memorabilia. He was also an expert on Muskegon history and his family genealogy, and loved gathering with family, friends and wide circle of cousins. In his retirement years, he traveled and visited museums, adding to his vast knowledge of local and military history.

SURVIVORS

Mr. Smith is survived by his beloved nieces, Pamela (Tim) Plamann, Karen (Robert) Melle and Deb Mulder, and their children Jack Towery, Luke Towery, Brad (Tiffany) Mulder, Kerri (Ryan) Brooks, Colton Anderson, Jared Anderson, Heather Plamann and Jill Plamann. Leigh was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Jacqueline Mulder, his nephew Kenneth Mulder, and his great nephew Scott Mulder.
