Mr. Bortell, age 84, died May 3, 2007. Born September 24, 1922, in Ludington, to Ralph and Twila (Lawcoch) Bortell, he had lived in the White Lake area the past 38 years. On October 25, 1947, in Ludington, he married the former Helen J. Ayers and had been a sales associate for the Berh Manning Co. He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, White Lake VFW Post #3256, and Algot Johnson American Legion Post #69. Mr. Bortell served in the US Merchant Marine and then in the US Coast Guard during World War II. He was preceded in death by 2 sisters and 1 brother. FAMILY: His wife, Helen; children, James Bortel, Richard Bortel, Jeffrey Bortell, and Lori (Michael) Rederstorf; grandchildren, Jason, Christopher (Jade), and Katelyn Rederstorf, Makenzie and Ty Bortell, and Tavis and Vicki Bortel; and 3 great-grandchildren. MEMORIAL SERVICE: Monday, May 7, 2007, at 12:00 PM at St. James Lutheran Church with the Rev. John W. Brooks officiating. A Military Salute will be conducted at the church by White Lake VFW Post #3256. VISITING HOURS: Monday, 11 AM until service time, at the church in Montague.
