GRENNAN, DR. LAWRENCE E. Muskegon Dr. Lawrence E. Grennan was born in Fort Wayne, IN on September 9, 1923 to Lawrence and Mildred Bennett Grennan. The family moved to Muskegon in 1932 and he graduated from Muskegon High School in June 1941. He attended Muskegon Junior College until entering the US Army Air Corps in February of 1943. He trained as a P51 fighter pilot for Very Long Range missions and ultimately was stationed on Iwo Jima in April 1945 where he flew fighter cover for bombing missions over Japan. After World War II ended he was stationed in the Philippines until his final discharge in August 1946. He continued his education at the University of Michigan and Wayne State University School of Medicine graduating in June 1952. Dr. Grennan's medical training included internship in Florida and a one year surgical residency in Dallas, TX. He was in General Practice in Newberry, MI for 5 years. From 1959 to 1962 he continued his surgical training at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids and then returned to Newberry where he practiced until 1966 when he began a Plastic Surgery residency again in Grand Rapids at Butterworth Hospital under Dr. Ralph Blocksma. In July 1968 Dr. Grennan began his Plastic Surgery practice in Muskegon which continued until his retirement in December 1988. Better known as Larry to his colleagues and many friends he was forever expanding his knowledge continuing to attend medical conferences and seminars until his recent illness. He served as an advisor to the Hackley Hospital School of Nursing until it's closing and then later at Muskegon Community College Nursing program. He was on the board of Visiting Nurses/Hospice for several years. Dr. Grennan was a member of the Muskegon County Medical Society, Michigan State Medical Society, and the American Medical Association. A dedicated environmentalist he was a member of Muskegon Save Our Lakes and Muskegon Save Our Shoreline organizations. Lawrence was a naturalist who knew trees, birds and all manner of natural phenomena. He belonged to the Muskegon Fine Arts Guild and the Lakeland Painters. As an artist he specialized in watercolors both portrait and scenic and he was a talented photographer. SURVIVORS He is survived by his wife, of 52 years, the former Barbara Palmer and 5 children: Eileen Alan Young, Marcy Mark Anzelon, Sheila Duane Cooper, Lawrence Tina Grennan and Daniel Sonja Grennan. There are 15 grandchildren: Corey Brigitte Anzelon, Danny and Todd Anzelon; Melissande Greg Deardurff, O'Neill and Spencer Young, Megan and Ian Cooper, Zachary, Larmo and Dillan Grennan, Amanda Sowa. Mason, McKenna and Barbara Jean Grennan. Two brothers, Ray Geri Grennan of Muskegon and Al Myra Grennan, San Diego, CA and one sister, Eleanor Grennan, Columbia City, IN. Our daughter of the heart Amy Bill McNamara and their children, Russ Sara, Matthew and Corinna McNamara. Sister-in-law, Beverly Stan Swears and brother-in-law, Barry Delores Palmer and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends also survive. MEMORIAL SERVICE Saturday, June 5, 2004, 11:00 AM at Samuel Lutheran Church with Rev. Louis Glick officiating. VISITATION Friday, 6-9 PM at Clock Funeral Home.
