A true outdoorsman, Larry Magaluk was a genuine jack of all trades who seemed to be the right man for the job no matter what task was at hand. He was a dedicated father who passed his many skills on to his sons and his passion for the great outdoors as well. Holidays were always special times for Larry as they were times that were filled with family, fun, and good cheer. Larry was a man of great strength who bravely fought against the enemy that declared war on his body and if recovery were based on will alone, he certainly would have been victorious. He leaves behind a lifetime of memories that will be treasured by those he leaves behind. The decade that became known as the Nifty Fifties was one of great change in America. Nestled within this unprecedented time was the year 1955 that boasted of countless noteworthy events including a huge spark in the civil rights movement when Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on an Alabama bus, the introduction of the home microwave, and the first column ever published by Ann Landers. This was a remarkable year for the family of Raymond and Joan (Risinger) Magaluk since it was on February 5th that they welcomed the birth of their son, Larry Alan. Born in Detroit, Michigan, Larry was the third of seven children in his family including his brothers, Gary, Alan and Phil, and his sisters, Linda, Sherry, and Diane. He was raised in the family home in the suburbs of Detroit where he enjoyed a childhood that was rather typical for young boys of this generation. After graduating from Cherry Hill High School, Larry went to work at his fathers company Colorperfect in Detroit. It was also around this time that Larry started dating Cathy White, a girl he knew from his years in Detroit. They dated for a time and after falling in love, were united in marriage on a bridge the family had built over the White River on the family property. Together they were blessed with two sons, Arron in 1978 and Kevin in 1985. When their marriage ended in divorce in the late eighties, Arron lived with his dad while Kevin lived with his mother. After he was a bit older, Kevin lived with his father from time to time as well. Larrys love of the outdoors eventually drew him to relocate to West Michigan. He was the most happy there and was a great help to his Father, Mother and siblings. Whatever needed to be fixed Larry fixed. Whatever job needed to be done he did. Over the years, Larry enjoyed several interests most of which were outdoors. He loved to hunt and fish and passed these passions on to his sons. The three Magaluk boys had many fun-filled camping trips together, often including Larrys nephews. These trips were so memorable and always accompanied by Larrys infamous ghost stories. He also had great times at deer camp with his buddies, Paul and Ron Lackey, and with other friends, too. Larry also had an interest in toys including dune buggies, trucks, a Mach 1 Mustang, and snowmobiles in addition to many other things. He was organized and meticulous by nature so he always put forth the time and effort to keep his tools in order and in great working shape. Life was forever changed for Larry after visiting the dentist in 2008. When the dentist noticed something questionable, Larry went to the doctor and was diagnosed with throat cancer. He fought the disease with everything in him, undergoing surgery and chemotherapy. Larry did his best to keep up with his work on the property, but eventually was hospitalized. Larry Magaluk was a real mans man who worked hard throughout his life. He loved spending time outdoors and sharing his passions with those he loved. Although life was not without struggles at times, Larry was a man of great character who took whatever life brought him and made the best of it. He was a man who was deeply loved, and he will be deeply missed by those whose lives he touched. Larry Magaluk died on October 13, 2010. Larrys family includes his 2 sons, Arron and Kevin Magaluk; 3 brothers, Gary (Helen) Magaluk, Alan Magaluk, Phil (Kathy) Magaluk; 3 sisters, Linda (Dave) Glassford, Sherry Peterson, Diane (Richard) Morningstar; Father Raymond Magaluk; and many nieces and nephews.
