SZTEN, MR. JULIAN F. Norton Shores, MI Julian F. Szten, Mr. Clean Air, passed away Easter Sunday, April 20, 2003, in his home at 1185 Brookwood Drive in Norton Shores at the age of 83. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucylle Virginia Szten and his eldest son, William. He is survived by his remaining children, Julia, Thomas and Brian and his second wife, formerly Virginia Flemming of Montague and his numerous loving stepchildren. Julian Szten was the youngest son of Ukrainian immigrants, Nicholas and Helen Szten and grew up in the Crowley Street neighborhood during the depression. He served his country in the 396th Squadron of the 11th U.S. Army Air Force in the Aleutian Islands during World War II, earning a bronze star for participation in bringing the war to Japan in the first action against Japanese soil since Doolittle's raid on Tokyo. Mr. Szten graduated from Muskegon Junior College and Michigan Technological University with a degree in mechanical engineering. Julian took several positions from Teledyne to Shaw Walker beofre working for the County of Muskegon in 1965. He faithfully served the County of Muskegon with great conviction for nearly twenty years as the chief of the Air Pollution Control Division of the Muskegon County Health Department. Mr. Szten earned numerous awards and distinguished himself with both the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for his many pioneering contributions to air quality control. He literally made it possible for all in Muskegon County to breathe easier. Mr. Szten also contributed of himself to many organizations above and beyond his career and he will be sorely missed.
