Joyce Singerling graduated from this earth December 19, 2009. She was born in Chicago in 1915, the third child of Joseph and Grace Cihaks seven children. When the family moved to Muskegon, Joyce attended Muskegon High School. She enjoyed journalism, serving on the yearbook staff, and also became a varsity cheerleader. After graduating from MHS, she attended Muskegon Community College, wrote articles for the Muskegon Chronicle, became secretary at First Congregational Church, then met John Singerling. They married and spent the next 62 years raising five children. John and Joyce made two trips to the Holy Land together. Joyce also remained active in church, as a Sunday School teacher, Womens Circle, and Governing Board leader, as well as in the community through the PTA and Girl Scouts. For many years, she walked the neighborhoods, taking census. She served as a hospital volunteer for over 40 years and was a caring caller at nursing homes and to shut-ins at their homes. As a result of her dedication to family and her volunteer activities, Joyce was selected as the Muskegon County Mother of the Year in 1970. Joyce continued her volunteer activities through 2003, when she had heart surgery, and later a stroke. She was a member of two Red Hat groups. Joyce attended church each Sunday and Prayer Group on Mondays. SURVIVORS Joyce is survived by her three sons: Jim (Molly), John (Cindy), and Joe, 11 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, 2 sisters (Antoinette Reynolds & Joanne Blakkan), and many loving nieces and nephews. MEMORIAL SERVICE A celebration of Joyce's life will be held Sunday, January 10, 2010, 1:00 PM at First Congregational Church UCC, 1201 Jefferson St., Muskegon, MI 49441. VISITATION Sunday, one hour prior to the service at First Congregational Church UCC. MEMORIAL: In lieu of flowers please consider donations to First Congregational Church.
