Hoffman, Mrs. Joyce Muskegon, Michigan On March 17, 2021 our little Irish gal Joyce (Randall) Hoffman walked into the arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at age 94. She was born in Eaton Rapids, Michigan on May 12, 1926 to Arleith "Jack" Tracy Randall and Ruth Irene (Tingley) Randall. Mrs. Hoffman was adopted by Elmer and Mae Tingley of Eaton Rapids in March of 1928. Mr. and Mrs. Tingley provided her a wonderful, loving life for a beautiful little girl. In 1936 from age 10-15 Joyce was returned to the care of her birth mother and a step father, after the death of her adoptive parents. At age 15 she saved her babysitting money, purchased a bus ticket and arrived at the home of dear friends George and Frances Lawrence in Holland, Michigan. After a short stay in Holland, Joyce moved to Muskegon to live with George's brother, William (Bill) Lawrence and his wife Gilletta until her marriage to Frederick Hoffman in March of 1945. Frederick was then serving in the U.S. Army as a ball turret gunner aboard a B-17 bomber in World War II flying 35 missions over Germany from England. Prior to Joyce's marriage to Frederick, she worked as a dental assistant when her children were in grade school and junior high. Joyce worked one year in the maternity ward of a hospital in East St. Louis, Illinois, while Fred attended a year of college at Parks University. The rest of her life was spent being a housewife and mother to their four children. Joyce was a great baker and had the children spend a lot of time with her at Hackley Public Library, the beach and the beautiful Lake Michigan sand dunes. During a long lay-off from Teledyne Continental Motors for Fred, Joyce helped him build several homes either for sale or for the family to live in. It seems people wanted the home the family lived in as it was easier to picture a home with furniture already in it. The new build was for the Hoffman family and they moved many times. The family were long time members of Grace Christian Reformed Church in Muskegon. During their 67 years of marriage, Joyce and Fred also attended Grace Bible Church in Mobile, Alabama when Teledyne transferred their aircraft division to Mobile. In retirement, Joyce and Fred did a great deal of traveling including three trips to Alaska. Each trip to Alaska would be three months in duration, one of which was with dear friends Paul and Doris Stearns. They visited many National Parks, visited their son Fred Jr. and family in Europe as Fred was a missionary. They also visited their grandson, Norm Dillon who was serving the U.S. Army in Germany. Joyce and Fred also enjoyed their trip to Italy. SURVIVORS Joyce is survived by three daughters, Gilletta (Marvin) Terlaan of Muskegon, Kathleen VanDyke of Muskegon, Diana (Allen) Alexander of Punta Gorda, Florida; 26 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren.
