John "Michigan John" J. Steinbach, age 78, passed away Tuesday, March 6, 2007, at the Leila & Cyrus Poppen Hospice Residence in Muskegon. He was born March 16, 1928, in Muskegon to Christian and Melissa (Schott) Steinbach, and he married the former Mary Mastenbrook on November 13, 1952, in Goshen, IN. Mr. Steinbach graduated from Muskegon High School in 1947 and from Muskegon Business College in 1950. He served his country in the National Guard and was owner and operator of both A to Z Auto Parts in Spring Lake and Lake Michigan Auto Parts in Grand Haven. He was a member of the American Legion Post #28, the Moose Lodge, and a former member of the Eagles Lodge. He was also a member and former president of the Port City Puddle Jumpers Antique Car Club. He thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, working, and fishing, and he had a special interest in antique cars. Survivors include his loving wife, Mary; a daughter, Mardi (Dave) Billinghurst of Spring Lake; 2 sons, John Steinbach (Denise) and Randy (Kathy) Steinbach, both of Spring Lake; 6 grandchildren: Jordin, Trevor, and Halle Billinghurst and Andrea, Randall, and Jonathan Steinbach; a sister-in-law, Pauline Steinbach of Spring Lake; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, George Steinbach. The service for Mr. Steinbach will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 12, 2007, at VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home in Grand Haven with Rev. Daniel Anderson officiating. Friends may meet the family 5-8 p.m. Sunday, March 11, at the funeral home in Grand Haven. Interment will be in Lake Forest Cemetery. Memorials to the Salvation Army or the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan.
