Joel Vugteveen, , Dds Jr.

Vugteveen, DDS Joel Jr. Muskegon Joel Vugteveen, Jr. , DDS (87), loving husband of Joyce and father of Betsy, Andy and Damian, passed away on May 11, 2020. Joel was born in Spring Lake, Michigan on January 30, 1933. His parents, Dr. Joel & Janet (Lowe) Vugteveen, Sr., subsequently moved to what is now Norton Shores, where Joel spent his childhood and adulthood. After graduating from Muskegon High School, Joel attended Muskegon Community College, and the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. He initially went into dental practice with his father, and not long thereafter into business for himself where he practiced in Muskegon for over 50 years. Joel always loved music, whether playing or listening. He was a proud member of the MHS band (principal clarinet) and U of M marching band in its heyday under William Reveli. His favorite composers were Mahler, Sibelius and Tchaikovsky. He enjoyed downhill skiing for years, especially the long runs on the mountains in Colorado. He was an excellent cook, a master of the barbecue, and an avid fisherman. In later life, reading crime, action and mystery novels gave him many hours of pleasure. He was a member of the Elks, Kiwanis Club, and the American Dental Association. A special place will always remain in Joel's heart for Michigan football! GO BLUE!!! Joel is survived by his wife of 36 years, Joyce, and children, Elizabeth "Betsy" Butterfield of North Muskegon, Joel Andrew "Andy" Vugteveen of Grand Haven, Damian (Leah) Bullis of Detroit, Brother-in-law George (Nancy) VanVerst of Chicago, as well as his beloved dog, Buddy. He was preceded in death by sister Mary VanVerst. A celebration of Joel's life will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice.
