Joe Nathan

Muskegon Heights, Michigan

Joe Nathan Beal, born in Bolton, Mississippi on March 11, 1948, to Joe and Jessie Mae (Ford) Beal, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 29, 2023. Joe, an Airman Second Class (A2C) with two stripes, served with honor in the U.S. Air Force during the 1960s. On April 15, 1988, he married the love of his life, Jenise Townsel.

A proud graduate of Muskegon Catholic Central High School, Joe dedicated over 18 years of his life to serving the community as a deputy sheriff for the Muskegon County Sheriff's Department. His unwavering commitment led him to retire in 2009.

Devoted to his family, Joe was a member of Christ Temple Apostolic Faith Church and held membership in the Fraternal Order of Police. His zest for life extended beyond his professional and spiritual pursuits. He found joy in riding motorcycles, engaging in martial arts, and honing his skills at the pistol range. His passion for cooking shone through in his mastery of barbecue.

Joe adeptly assisted his mother, Jessie Mae, in managing the family produce market, Beal and Sons Produce, following the passing of his father, Joe Sie Beal, established in May 1966-2014 until his mother's retirement. He commenced working for the family market at the tender age of 13, steering semi-trucks across the country and making stops in locations such as North Carolina, Selma, Alabama, and Lake City, Florida.

In addition to his service and commitment to the community, Joe co-owned and operated a successful barbecue restaurant, Beal Ribs Tips & Chips, with his devoted wife, Jenise Beal, for three years (2011-2014). In their cozy kitchen, they teamed up to create a secret BBQ sauce known only to them. Joe worked his magic on the grill, and Jenise expertly baked pound cakes and sweet potato pies which they sold in their restaurant and all over Muskegon County.

Joe is survived by his beloved wife, Jenise Townsel- Beal, his mother, Jessie Mae Beal, and his children: Joseph and Sanita Beal, Jessica Townsel-Beal, Jenika Townsel, Jamika Townsel, Joe Sie (Deborah) Beal, and Lashonda Beal, all of Muskegon, MI, Felicia Smith of Grand Rapids, MI, and Monika Beal of Jacksonville, FL. He also leaves behind his good friend and brother-in-law, Simone J. Townsel of Killeen, TX.

He is preceded in death by his father, Joe Sie Beal, his best cousin, Glen Beal, Napolean Beal, and his good friend and brother-in-law, Arthur D. Townsel.

**"As we remember, let us cherish the moments shared and find solace in the impact he had on our lives."**
