PORTER, MRS. JOAN Sparta, MI Joan Peabody Porter, age 79, died Tuesday, November 26, 2002. Born in Chicago, IL on January 6, 1923 to Howard Bell & Elizabeth Learned Peabody, Joan attended school in Lake Forest, IL & The Ethel Walker School in Simsbury, CT. She also attended Mills College in Oakland, CA & then the University of Chicago following Pearl Harbor. During the war, she managed her family's real estate business & served as a Red Cross Volunteer. She was married on September 25, 1943 to Rev. Phil Porter, Jr. who served as Adjutant General under General Eisenhower for the Air Transport Command. Besides raising her children, Mrs. Porter had many interests including being an active minister's wife, tutor, history teacher & a member of St. Gregory's Episcopal Church. She enjoyed golf, stamp collecting, building dollhouses, gardening, needlework & was an avid reader of many subjects. SURVIVORS Joan & Phil brought 4 children into this world, all of whom survive her in death: Dr. Andrew Porter, PhD of Livermore, CA, Judith Neal Ferguson of Sparta, MI, Dr. Margot Miller, PhD of Easton, MD & Carol Fjeld of Saratoga, WY. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Phil Porter in 1999. MEMORIAL SERVICE Friday, December 6, 2002, 1:30 PM at St. Gregory's Episcopal Church with Fr. John David officiating. Her ashes will be interred in St. Gregory's Memorial Garden.
