KEENE, MRS. JOAN HOERNER North Muskegon Joan Hoerner Keene passed away peacefully at home on June 7, 2004. She was born June 8, 1914, in Lewisburg, OH, to Julia Oldfather and Charlie Hoerner. She graduated from Earlham College in Richmond, IN with a BA in chemistry and home economics. Joan worked as a chemist until her marriage to James W. Keene in 1938. They moved to Muskegon, MI where she was active in community service including Service League, Hume Home Auxilary, Friends of the Hackley Public Library, and Greater Muskegon Women's Club. She was also involved with Muskegon County Girl Scouts and the Boy Scouts of America. She was an active long-time member of First Congregational Church of Muskegon. A member of Muskegon Country Club, Joan was an avid golfer. She also enjoyed reading,, bowling, needlepoint, and attending Dixieland Jazz concerts and festivals with Jim. Her greatest achievement was that of wife, mother, and grandmother. The love of family was what she was all about. She taught by example, always thinking of others first. Joan was preceded in death by an infant son, Henry Clay. SURVIVORS Her husband of sixty-five years, James W. Keene; four daughters: Rebecca Keene of Orange, CA; Jean Keene of North Muskegon, MI; Jody Randy Northuis of Holland, MI; Janet David Lange of Commerce, MI; one son, Jerry Vivian Keene`of North Muskegon, MI; and seven grandchildren: Chris Mary Wager, Scott Mikki Northuis, Eric Northuis, Erin Lange, Brent Lange, Jamie Keene, and Emily Keene; one greatgranddaughter, Abbi Northuis. SERVICE A private family celebration of Joan's life will be held by her family. VISITATION At Joan's request, there will be no visitation.
