James "Larry" Ayers

Ayers, Mr. James Lawrence "Larry" Muskegon, Michigan James Lawrence "Larry" Ayers, age 89, passed away at home on Saturday, December 28, 2019. He was born in Muskegon Heights, MI on April 6, 1930 to James & Irene (Roche) Ayers. He married the former Julie Flynn on December 27, 1956. Mr. Ayers was a graduate of Muskegon Heights H.S, Muskegon Community College and the University of Michigan where he earned his BA and MA degrees. Larry was teacher for Muskegon Public Schools for 37 years where he taught American History, Government and driver education. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954-1956. Larry was an Old Newsies, a former member of the Muskegon Yacht Club, MEA-Retired where he served 10 years on the Board and was an advocate for public education. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church for 59 years and served as a Deacon and was active in the Men's Breakfast, Hunger Ministry and CROP Walk. Larry enjoyed sailing, bowling, bicycling, and was an avid gardener and volunteered at the church gardens and the Hume Home. SURVIVORS Wife of 63 years, Julie; Daughter Amy Ayers of Grand Rapids; Daughter-in-law Amy S. Ayers of Grand Ledge; 2 Grandchildren, Ian & Emily Ayers; Sister and brother-in-law Jacquelyn and Donald Hiller of FL; a niece and nephews. Larry was preceded in death by his son Michael Ayers in 2016. SERVICE Friday, January 3, 2020, 11:00 AM at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. James B. Rausch officiating.
