Grace Mary Schram, the fifth child born to James and Orra Schram was unlike the rest of her siblings. Grace, soon to be known as Gracie Mae, was born with a birth defect. Her handicap would affect her and those who knew her the rest of her life. Gracie Maes birth defect affected her outer ears and face...but never her spirit. At the age of 7 when she entered school it was obvious she was unable to hear what was going on in class. She couldnt hear the teachers. She was enrolled at Michigan School For The Deaf at age 7. There she was partnered up with a lifelong friend Sylvia who would teach her signs and the way of the deaf. For the deaf, attending MSD meant leaving your family and staying in the dorms all week. You went home only on the weekends. Grace longed to be home. The deaf school provided activities, friendships, and life long bonds for those who lived in the dorms and attended school daily. Grace enjoyed playing basketball and the many friendships that developed. She graduated at the age of 20 in 1945. A visit to Muskegon landed her a job at Sealed Power shortly after graduation. She married her high school sweetheart, but the marriage ended after a year. She stayed in Muskegon working and building friendships with the deaf at work and in the community. In December 1952 she married George Pellet who was 5 years her junior. Originally from New York, he spent his senior year at MSD. Upon graduation, George moved back to Muskegon with his parents and got a job at Muskegon Piston Ring Company where he retired after 30 years. August 1954, Gracie Mae gave birth to Nancy. Seventeen months later, Sandy was born. In May 1958 David was Born and lastly in 1965 along came Larry. Gracie was 40! She loved her kids and everyone elses too. She took on babysitting jobs and raised many children, including her own. She also loved cleaning homes and ironing for people. Hard working and generous like her mother, Grace was always the life of the party. At one point, a deaf pastor told her to "take her kids to church. There was no church in town that serviced the deaf so for many years, she dropped them off and picked them up. She could never attend with them as there was no one to interpret for her. In 1972, Bethel Baptist Church of Fruitport started a deaf ministry where the deaf would be interpreted for, taught and learn about God and His word. That was the first time she could attend church with her family. There she learned about God, and salvation. Grace accepted Christ as her Savior and it changed her life. She told all her deaf friends about God. Her family watched as she quit smoking, started reading her Bible and began praying. She never looked back. Her love for God was shared with everyone she met. Living longer than anyone in her families recorded history, Gracie Mae is now in Heaven with the God she shared with everyone. She is no longer here to tell you about Him. As you read this, you can know for sure she is singing Victory In Jesus, in Heaven with Him. Mrs. Grace M. Pellet, age 90, passed away Monday, March 30, 2015. She was born in Pontiac, Michigan on October 7, 1924 to James and Orra (Best) Schram and married George Pellet on December 13, 1952.
