Grace Rose Carr

Mrs. Grace Rose Carr, age 78, passed away Thursday, November 8, 2007, at Harbor Hospice Poppen House, after a long struggle with lung cancer. She was born on August 29, 1929 in Alma Michigan, the youngest of ten children to Burton B. and Grace A. (VanTassel) Hopkins. She had been a resident of Muskegon since 1944. She graduated from Fruitport High School in 1948 and went on to Michael Reese School of Nursing in Chicago. She married Leland L. Carr on June 10, 1950, who preceded her in death in 2005. Grace was a social worker for the State of Michigan (Dept. of Social Services) until her retirement in August 1991. She found great joy in singing and traveling with her Sweet Adeline sisters. She is survived by her daughters, Susan Lee Carr, Deborah Joan Verhulst, and Sandra Lynn Carr, all of Muskegon; grandchildren, Ronda (Doran) Sinke of Muskegon, Kendra (Michael) Clarke of Tucson, Arizona, and Jeff (Amber) Carr of Grand Haven; and great-grandchildren, Kolten and Ariana Sinke and Janell Canfhow. She is also survived by 1 brother, Willis (Bea) Hopkins of Grand Rapids, Michigan and a sister-in-law, Irene Baggerly of Apache Junction, Arizona. She also leaves many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the many people of Harbor Hospice who loved and cared for her like she was their own; Bobbie, Anna, Mattie, and Carl, you will be in our hearts forever. A MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, November 14, 2007 at The Lee Chapel Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc. 6291 S. Harvey St. Norton Shores, MI 49444 231-798-1100. Rev. Lewis H. Glick will be officiating. Friends may meet with the family beginning one hour prior to the service. Grace will be laid to rest in Norton Cemetery. Memorial contributions to Harbor Hospice.
