Mr. Gerald "Jerry" Harjer, age 84, passed away Thursday, August 28, 2008 at his home. Jerry was born August 27, 1924 to Ben John and Henrietta (VanZuthem) Harjer in Muskegon and was a lifelong resident of the area. He was a US Navy veteran and was employed as the custodial supervisor for Muskegon Regional Center for 15 years, retiring in 1982. Prior to that he was employed by the Mona Shores High School. He kept busy following retirement by driving bus for Reeths- Puffer and Wesley schools. He enjoyed trains, model railroading, Tiger Baseball and traveling. On January 30, 1970, Jerry married Sally Kozler and she survives him along with 2 children, G. Jason (Shannon) Harjer of Bloomington, IL and Sheryl (James) Sullivan of Grand Haven; 2 grandchildren, Dreyton (Heather) Hardy and Daneen (Richard) Tripp; 2 great-grandchildren, Alexandra Lyon and Carson Hardy; 6 brothers, his twin, Harold (Doris) Harjer of Wilcox, AZ, Fred Harjer of Muskegon, Henry Harjer of Spring Lake, Michael (Hazel) Harjer and Ben John Harjer all of Muskegon, and Everett (Dorothy) Harjer of Tucson, AZ; 3 sisters, Henrietta Bell, Jo Ann Paul and Peggy (Robert) Forest, all of Muskegon, and many nephews and nieces. Jerry was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Mary Ann Hardy; 2 brothers, Walter and Herman Harjer; and 1 sister, Fannie Handlogten. A FUNERAL SERVICE will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, August 30, 2008 at The Sytsema Chapel Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc. 737 Apple Avenue 231 726-5210 with Pastor Ben Jansen officiating. VISITATION with the family will be 6-8 PM this evening and 1 hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, MEMORIAL CONTRIBUTIONS may be made to Lakeshore Lung Society.
