Baker,
Georgia Jo
Muskegon, Michigan
Georgia Jo Baker, 94, passed away on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, and cherished memories. Born on May 3, 1930, in Flint, MI, to James and Panagiota (Maverick) Chatas, she graduated from Flint Central High School and attended Flint Junior College. On November 12, 1950, she married George Baker, who preceded her in death in 1998. Together, they built a beautiful life filled with devotion, love, and traditions that will continue to resonate for generations.
In her early career, Georgia worked at various local dry cleaners, later serving as an admitting clerk at Hackley Hospital, and ultimately finishing her career at the Red Cross. She was a devoted member of Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, where she participated in Philoptochos, Daughters of Penelope, and taught Sunday School.
Georgia's creativity was evident in her many talents. She was an exceptional seamstress, crafting christening gowns for family members and friends, and she had a flair for knitting, crocheting, and creating beautiful table decorations. Her passion extended to a beloved collection of porcelain dolls, beautifully displayed in what her family refers to as "the doll room." Georgia's culinary skills was a gift she generously shared with her family and friends. Her home was often filled with traditional Greek treats including her specialties - Tiropita, Koulourakia, Baklava and Kourabiedes.
However, it was Georgia's family that truly brought her joy. Her greatest pride and happiness came from her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She adored each one of them and loved watching them grow. Christmas Eve was a particularly special time for Georgia and her family, as they gathered each year to celebrate around the Christmas tree. Over the years, the tree became adorned with handmade ornaments, many of which she personally created with care and love. One of Georgia's final wishes was for each family member to pick their favorite ornament as a keepsake, a symbol of the family traditions she cherished.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George, her brother Nicholas Chatas, sister-in-law Catherine Chatas, her son James Baker, daughter-in-law Nancy (Zmarly) Baker, and her son-in-law William Kuziak. She will be deeply missed by her surviving children, daughter Stephanie Kuziak, son Michael (Stephanie) Baker; her grandchildren, Angela (Charles) Forrester, Anthony (Tamara Zimmerman) Baker, Nicholas Baker, Heather (Justin) Wallor, Brittany (Andrew) Grasley, and Melissa (Dakoda) Steele; as well as her great-grandchildren, Alexus, Claire, Aletha Jo, Aaron, Luke, Hunter, and Ryan.
A service to honor Georgia's life will be held on Friday, January 10, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, with Rev. Father Joseph Gingrich officiating. Interment will follow at Lakeside Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, Trinity Hospice, or the American Cancer Society.
