Born in Chicago to George Koolovitz, Sr. and Sophie (Zeleznick) Koolovitz. Died Sunday at VNS Scolnick Hospice House. Preceded in death by his parents, brother Rudolph, and wife Laura. Mr. Koolovitz served in the US Army Maintenance Battalion of Company A, First Armored Division. He saw duty in the Italian, the Rome Arno, and in the Tunisian Campaign during which he was captured by the Germans. Mr. Koolovitz received 3 battle stars, 5 overseas bars, and the European/African/Middle Eastern Theatre ribbon. Following WWII, Mr. Koolovitz worked at Teledyne Continental Motors as a machinist until his retirement. During his working years he enjoyed piloting his own small plane, boating, square dancing, and family get-togethers in the Marquette neighborhood where he and his relatives lived near one another. Later, he and Laura moved to North Muskegon where George experienced the kindnesses of his neighbors, especially during his later years. George was a proud member of VFW Post 446 whose members' company he and his friend Marian enjoyed. George was cared for by Dr. Ratchford and by Nurse Practitioner Kathy Reid, of whom George was especially fond. SURVIVORS Mr. Koolovitz is survived by his sister Josephine Wierema of Norton Shores; step-son Rollin (Delores) Coutchie of Salem, MI; nephews, Nick (Maureen) Wierema of Muskegon and Rudy (Beatie) Koolovitz of Cedar Creek Township; nieces, Peggy (Dave) Dolislager of Dalton Township, Mary Jo (Tom) Pletcher of Norton Shores, and Linda Keller (Phil Salenski) of Maple City; good friend, Marian Boukamp of Muskegon; and numerous great and great-great nephews and nieces. Following a 2 hour visitation at The Sytsema Chapel Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc. 737 Apple Ave. 231-726-5210 Wednesday, April 23 from 12 Noon to 2PM family and friends are invited to share a meal in memory of George. There will be no other service. Interment at Sunrise Memorial Gardens. Memorial Contributions to VNS Scolnick Hospice House or to Christian Care Senior Care Community on McLaughlin Avenue, where George resided the last six months will be appreciated.
