George Hansen

Mr. George W. Hansen, age 102, a lifetime resident of Muskegon, died Thursday, September 20, 2012. He was born in Muskegon, MI on January 8, 1910 to Nels & Mary Hansen and married the former Virginia M. Johnson on September 3, 1935. Until retiring in 1976, Mr. Hansen was employed by the National Lumberman's Bank, now Huntington Bank, for 47 years. He was hired as a mail and collection clerk, progressed through various officer positions and prior to retirement, was Chairman of the Board of Directors. He has been active in several state banking organizations as well as many local civic and social community groups. Some highlights of these were as Trustee of Muskegon Public Schools for 12 years, 2 as President, President of the National Association of American Business Club (Ambucs), as well as the Muskegon Club, President of the Rotary Club of Muskegon, President of Central Lutheran Church, Secretary of the Hume Home of Muskegon for 35 years, and Executive Secretary of the County of Muskegon Community Foundation for 4 years. During those years the Foundation purchased the Michigan Theater, now the Frauenthal Center, and he supervised the renovation and restoration of the Center which is now one of Muskegon's greatest treasures. He was a member of the Muskegon Country Club & the Rotary Club of Muskegon for over 45 years, the Muskegon Elks Club for over 65 years, and a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church. He enjoyed all sports, especially golf, bowling, and card games such as bridge, gin rummy and cribbage. SURVIVORS Daughters, Jean (John) Droste of SC, Mary (Jack) Sullivan of Grand Rapids; grandchildren, Julie (Eric) Radloff, Peter Droste, Thomas Droste, Michael (Cheryl) Hellman, Gregory Hellman, Jennifer (Ryan) Schmidt, Colleen (Scott) Green, Michelle (Rob) Sharpe; great granchildren, Ian & Lauren Hellman, Kayla & Kara Green, Rachael, Ryan & Riley Sharpe. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Hansen October 23, 2003. They were married for 68 years.
