George H. Gasahl, age 79, of Twin Lake, passed away on Monday at home after fighting a long, courageous battle with cancer. He was born on October 20, 1928, in Chicago to George and Jeannette (Mooney) Gasahl and married Eleanor Stone on June 17, 1950, in Muskegon. George was a businessman and owner of Graichens in Fremont. George was proud to be a community leader and was instrumental in the development of downtown Fremont. He was a member of the Muskegon Elks, Newaygo-Pilgrim Masonic Lodge #131, Fremont Chamber of Commerce, CAM Club, and had served as a Director of the Old Kent Bank in Fremont and Dalton Township Board of Trustees. He was a Marine veteran of the Korean Conflict and member of the First Congregational Church in Fremont. George is survived by his wife, Eleanor of Twin Lake; children, Marjorie Dorr of Fruitport, Mary (Vancey) Bown of Norton Shores, George (Dr. Laurie) Gasahl III of Muskegon, and Jim (Brenda) Gasahl of Norton Shores; 7 grandchildren, Allison and Benjamin and Alicia Dorr, Tracy and G. Henry IV Gasahl, Tucker and Evan Bown; sisters in law, Patricia McDonell and Barbara Wenk. Visitation will be held Thursday, December 6, from 6-8 p.m. at the Crandell Funeral Home in Fremont with funeral services on Friday 1 p.m. at the First Congregational Church in Fremont. For a more lasting memorial, friends are asked to consider Hospice of Michigan or the American Cancer Society.
