Frederick "Fred" Bartunek, 81, of Grand Haven, Michigan, passed away on March 19, 2026. Born on April 4, 1944, in Grand Haven to Frank and Josephine (Babcock) Bartunek, Fred was a lifelong West Michigander whose life reflected the virtues of quiet routine, practicality, and steadfast independence.
Fred graduated from Grand Haven High School and went on to work in manufacturing, including time with Harbor Industries. After a serious shoulder injury, he transitioned to disability, but he remained characteristically self-reliant and organized. Those who knew him remember a home kept for comfort and function: a favorite recliner, an exercise bike, and everything in its place.
Though private by nature, Fred enjoyed the simple satisfactions of everyday life. He took pride in a well-kept truck, kept birdseed on hand for the backyard visitors, and maintained a boat-suggesting peaceful hours on the water. He had a soft spot for dogs, especially a cherished collie remembered in small statues around his home.
Fred was a member, at one time, of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 925 in Grand Haven. He didn't seek the spotlight, preferring to keep to himself, a trait common in his extended family. Yet his careful planning spoke volumes about his consideration for others: years ago he made arrangements to ensure his final wishes would be simple and in order.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Josephine, and by his brother, Frankie, who passed the same year as their mother in 2005. He is remembered by extended family, including his first cousins once removed, Julie Mast and Steve Vander Ploeg, and by those who appreciated his steady, unassuming way.
In keeping with Fred's wishes, cremation has taken place with no formal services. Interment of ashes will be at Lake Forest Cemetery in Grand Haven alongside his parents. Family and friends who wish to pay their respects may do so in their own time and manner. Please visit www.clockfuneralhome.com to leave a memory or sign the online guestbook.
