Frank W. Smith, Jr., age 92, died Saturday, March 8, 2008. He was born in Hesperia, MI on December 27, 1915 to Frank W. Sr. and Lydia (Heckman) Smith. After graduation from Hesperia High School, he completed barbering school and then served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married the former Irene Raskey in 1942 and was a loving father to their daughter, Mary Ann, both of whom predeceased him. His 45 year career as a barber in Muskegon and Muskegon Heights afforded him the perfect opportunity to share his sense of humor and gift of storytelling. He enjoyed each working day because it connected him with many people of varying interests. Always looking for opportunities to learn and grow, at age 80, Frank learned to paint using water color and acrylic paints. At age 86, he learned to use a computer where he put his storytelling skills to good use writing detailed memories of his youth and his beloved hometown of Hesperia. His memoirs can be found in the local history room of the Hesperia Community Library. Frank enjoyed hunting, fishing, and all of nature. He was especially proud of his flower and vegetable gardens, which he maintained until sudden blindness at age 90 necessitated a move to an assisted living facility. Blessed with an amazing memory and sharp wit, Frank continued to share life and laughter with his many visitors and the Dayspring staff. Frank is survived by his brother, Carl (Viola) Smith of Fremont, MI and Naples, FL; and several nieces and nephews. Also left to cherish his memory are several special friends and neighbors who watched over him in his later years. The family would specifically like to thank Sally and Tom Kraley, Eileen and Jim Nordhoff, Pat and Clark Ganson, and Becky Tate for their constant support and friendship which meant so much to Frank. While his companionship will be missed here on earth, his friends and family are confident that he will continue to relate his many stories in his new home with God. Burial at Mona View Cemetery has taken place. A memorial service for Frank will be held later this spring.
